Though this site is primarily about ex-religious people, I am going to focus on a common aspect that many of our board members share, as well as a lot of the world. Dealing with christianity.
It is one of the hardest religions to leave, most christians are taught to "be" christian from birth. It is somewhat akin to brainwashing. Think about it, you are a young child, you love and trust your parents, they teach you everything, how to walk, talk, show you how to ride a bike, etc. You looked up to them, respected them, and figured they had all the answers...
Then they start doing to you, what was done to them, in the hopes to "save" your soul. They start in on you about jesus. They tell you they "know" he died for your sins, give you coloring books, send you to sunday school, tell you how much jesus loves you, and that he died for you.
You need no proof, after all, your parents know everything right? So you develop a deep core belief, that some "never" break free from and the ones that do break free, suffer much pain in the process. You parents did not "try" to harm you, they "thought" it was in your best interests. However, they did in fact harm you with preprogramming in the wrong direction. However, like the picture above, there is just as much proof the easter bunny is "god" as there is that jesus is god.
What Should A Parent Teach Their Kids About Christianity?
IMO A parent should not inflict religion on their children. They should be taught "what" religion is, not "which one is right". This is very hard, if not impossible for a christian parent to do, since they feel their religion is the only true one. It's not a matter of belief for them, but rather one of salvation.
Christian churchs, as well as other religions, are exclusive.
This negates pascal's wager, or "what if you are wrong" since most all religions, and sub-sects of religions do not allow you to join other religions also, it leaves you open to being "wrong" on many levels. (linked is an article on this wager, give it a read before continuing). It's this exclusion though, that makes it dangerous to society. Many feel it is their "mission" to set others straight. So much so, that wars get started in religions name. Another article to read here is "why is religion dangerous" it covers this point well. This sub-dividing, or exclusionary nature, was "meant" to build one church to power of the others, and keep the "flock" all under one roof, therefore ensuring the success and long life of the religion or sect. It is self serving, and causes a rift in society.
Why christians have a dangerous mind set
When you walk around thinking in your head that YOU are going to heaven, and those around you will not, THIS gives you an air of superiority that cause you to have, at the very least, a subconscious mind set of "I am better then you are". This is dangerous to society, as is always the case, when one group feels superior over another, they tend to disrespect the other, and "feel sorry" for them. Slavery is a good example. Society felt justified because they were "godless savages" and therefore not human, so they can be our slaves. Had they been considered equal, slavery would have never happened! Because native americans did not worship "jesus" this was cause enough for them to be brutally murdered en mass.
A superior mind set is NEVER healthy to anyone. We judge life in levels of intelligence. We consider ourselves to be superior to the animal kingdom simply because we are smarter. However, we ARE all part of the cycle of life, we too are animals. People that are in the christian faith tend to look upon atheists as "animals" beneath them. But we are animals, and so are they. Neither is better than the other.
Extraordinary claims require extraordinary proof
If you do not believe in the muslim religion, and someone wanted you to switch from christianity, wouldn't you NEED great proof to make this switch? Same holds true for an atheist. If you are going to sell a bill of goods, a book packed with "miracles" with ZERO proof that they even happened, you NEED something to close this sale that is not "on faith alone". Otherwise, you are just another snake oil salesman with a defective product.
Faith is NOT a Positive Trait
Faith is being sold around the world as a "good thing" but just how "good" is faith? It is not healthy to have blind faith in unproven things. It leads you to take "leaps" of faith. There have been countless people who have died due to blind faith. Charging into battle believing christ is on their side. Some leap off bridges in depression thinking "if I were meant to live god will save me". Some use their faith to badger others into believing too, always faithful their stance is right. It creates division and conflict.
